Methodist Workshop photo 4How do we transform our unique experiences into something universal about the human condition? This course will follow the typical workshop format, where we will discuss pieces of writing from our peers on a weekly basis. These peer-review discussions will be augmented by outside readings, with an emphasis on essays that bridge science and literature. We’ll do our best to accommodate any genre, although your instructor is best qualified to give feedback on fiction and nonfiction pieces.

About the instructor

RACHEL FAIRBANK received her BS in biology from Cornell University, did some graduate work in the developmental biology department at Baylor College of Medicine, and is now completing an MFA in creative nonfiction at the UH Creative Writing Program, where she is always looking to merge her science background with her writing pursuits. In addition to working as a science writer for UH, she is also an assistant editor of nonfiction for Gulf Coast. She is a regular contributor to the “Gray Matters” section of the Houston Chronicle.
