In his essay “The Creative Self,” neurologist and writer Oliver Sacks describes storytelling as a “fundamental way of making sense of our world.” This creative writing workshop will allow Harris Health and affiliated medical school employees an opportunity to discover the insights that come from crafting their own personal stories and encountering the stories of others. Participants will have a chance to share their work and receive feedback from their instructor and classmates, as well as offering feedback to others. Each week’s class meetings will also feature craft lessons, freewriting prompts, and brief readings from classic and contemporary fiction, memoir, and essay. The goal, ultimately, is to use our writing and reading as a vehicle for improved wellness, empathy, and communication skills. All levels of writing experience are welcome. Prior creative writing experience is not necessary.

A reading and celebration for workshop participants will be held on December 13, 5:00-6:30 pm in the Ben Taub auditorium.
