This six-week prose workshop will focus on the short story. We will use texts one could consider to be canonical alongside others one would not. In the time we spend with the short story, we will generate writing based on prompts from the readings and our discussions of them, and we will attempt to identify and ruminate on some of the metaphysical crises that compel us to write. Our goal for this workshop will be that we each walk away having a more complex and expanded system of metaphors with which to explain, write about, and communicate with the world around us. Storytelling is all about relationality. We will investigate and expand our perception of relationality through the empathetic practice of storytelling.

Writers of all kinds and experience levels, including those that write or are interested in poetry and prose, are welcome – crossover work is generative and I encourage it! This is ultimately a storytelling workshop.

JAXSON SPENCER is a writer from southern Indiana. He holds a BS in Biology from Purdue University. He is an Inprint C. Glenn Cambor fellow and current MFA candidate at the University of Houston, where he teaches writing composition and creative writing. He is currently at work on a chapbook-length project of poetry and prose. Most of his downtime is given to something musical, and he can’t find enough of either.
