“To essay is to attempt, to test, to make a run at something without knowing whether you are going to succeed.” Phillip Lopate
Writing a personal essay is an act of observation, of analysis, and of exploration, one in which writers draw on their own experiences to tell a larger story. In this 10-week workshop, participants will read examples of personal essays and discuss the craft elements that help shape effective stories. Then, using in-class writing exercises, participants will explore different essay forms, testing out styles and skills in order to develop a unique voice. Finally, participants will apply the craft of story-telling to their own experiences and observations, receiving and offering constructive criticism to each other.
