Just as important as what happens in a story is who tells it, and how. Language, style, voice, and structure are all determined by the point of view or narrative stance from which a story is told. In this workshop we will focus on point of view as a fundamental element of the craft of fiction. We will consider the following questions, among others: How is a story’s meaning shaped by its teller? How can we, as writers, make informed decisions about how to tell our stories—from what angle of vision and in which voice to present them to readers? Our main focus will be on participants’ work, but we will also examine works of published short fiction that illustrate the possibilities of point of view and its importance to storytelling. We will take as models stories written from a variety of perspectives (omniscient versus limited, reliable versus unreliable, singular versus plural, first person, second person, and third person) and told by narrators of all stripes: loveable and despicable, young and old, living and dead, honest and dishonest.
