SUMMARY:TRANSLATION AS WRITING 2019-112
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of literature many of the world’s best writers have been translators. More recently\, leading writers of the 20th century\, including Haruki Murakami\, Samuel Beckett\, Vladimir Nabokov and Italo Calvino\, spent parts of their careers engaged in the art of translation\, which can enrich a writer’s own work and enhance the way we think of language as a tool for expression. In this exploration of the craft of literary translation we will explore many aspects of the art\, including foreignization vs. domestication\, faithfulness\, fluency\, and the choices a translator must make when re-creating a text in a new language. While this workshop will focus on translation from Spanish to English\, writers working from any language in either prose or poetry are welcome. Participants will be asked to submit a 250 word sample of a translation-in-progress along with the corresponding pages from the original. \n
