Intro to Creative Writing
What makes a poem sing and sigh? What makes fiction captivating? What gives creative nonfiction its power? And how does one get started?
If you’re interested in writing but don’t know where to begin, this six-week course is a great place to take your first steps.
In this holistic introduction to creative writing, students will learn the fundamentals of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction through conversations about craft, readings of contemporary and classic texts, and in-class writing exercises designed to foster play, curiosity, and creativity. Participants will also have the opportunity to submit work for feedback from both their fellow writers and the instructor in a supportive workshop environment.
By the end of the course, participants will leave with a portfolio of work spanning poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, a glossary of craft terms and concepts generated throughout the class, and written feedback from the instructor on one to three pieces of their choosing.
Adrián Pachuca (they/he) is a queer, Latinx poet based in Houston, TX. A graduate of the University of Houston MFA program, their work has appeared (or is forthcoming) in Huizache, Poetry Is Currency, Cicada Creative Magazine, and elsewhere. They’ve also served as a nonfiction editor and poetry assistant editor of Gulf Coast Journal. Currently, they’re pursuing a PhD in cruising poetics and working on their collection, Ojo.
