Multi-Genre Writing, or “OMG, I DO WHAT I WANT” Writing
This workshop is open only to K-12 educators and is tuition-free
To quote mi querida hermana en la lucha (my sister in the struggle), writer/activist Dr. Raina Leon, “If we want to be better writers, then we mustn’t limit ourselves to the genre we write in—we must learn to be genre fluid.” That is what this 8-week course will be about—learning to flow in and out of different styles of writing to produce a particularly powerful set of interlocking pieces that excite us and our readers.
Join us as we explore the idea of “genre fluid”—mixing up the ways one can use memoir, prose, poetry, personal essay, flash fiction, and playwriting to create a new kind of narrative. Exemplary texts will be provided throughout the course. This workshop is generative in nature—only a few sessions will be used to workshop pieces in friendly community-based critiques. By the end of the course, participants will have enough multi-faceted work from which to begin a larger manuscript or project.
