This is an in-person workshop that takes place at Inprint House

Writing at the Heart of the Image

Ekphrasis—the verbal representation of a visual work—is one of literature’s oldest and most generative gestures. From the Greeks to more recent writers, we will approach art not as mere description but as a prompt for writing: we will learn to inhabit the heart of an image, to argue with it, to reimagine it, and through writing, to turn it into something new.

The workshop works across three genres at once—poetry, microfiction, and the short essay—and looks to contemporary writers such as Natalie Diaz, Terrance Hayes, Claudia Rankine, and Ocean Vuong as models for how an image can become elegy, argument, or lyric memoir. By the end of the session, each participant will have produced generative drafts in at least two genres and developed a shared vocabulary for discussing the relationship between image and language.
