Poetry and Play: Looking to Experimental Poetry for Lyrical Invigoration
Are you in need of a writing practice jumpstart? Are you bored with your own writing forms and/or content? In this weekend intensive poetry workshop, we will push our lyrical limits in order to shed comfort zones and go-to approaches to poems. Using the avant-garde as our guide, we will play, experiment, and innovate with quick-timed exercises, multimodal activities, collaborations, and more. Poems by writers Jos Charles, Layli Long Soldier, Henry Goldkamp, Hala Alyan, Douglas Kearny, Jennifer Tamayo, Montana Ray, and others will inspire class sessions.
Taking Language Poet Lyn Hejinian’s poetics essay “The Rejection of Closure” as a point of departure, this workshop explores the “open” and playful poem—the poem in which all “elements are maximally excited.” Come join us to learn more about what that could possibly mean! This workshop welcomes writers of all levels.
