A DOOR OPENS IN A POEM

Poems have a unique power to suddenly and surprisingly move us into larger realms of experience through a well-chosen word, or figure, or allusion. These are the passages that open up in a poem and permit us to enter into new and exciting associations and correspondences. This class will be dedicated to identifying some of the strategies that poets have used to orchestrate such experience-expanding moments in their poems, and we will discuss ways in which to bring those gestures into our own poems.

We will read and discuss together in class some example poems, and then we will spend time looking at a poem from each participant, briefly discussing its possibilities for generating surprise in expanding our experience. Because of the time constraints, these will not be comprehensive workshops of the poems, but each participant’s poem will be given a thorough reading by the instructor in the form of written comments. Because of this, participants will be asked to submit their poems via email a week in advance.
