Victoria Chang and Adrian Matejka will read from their new poetry collections Tree of Knowledge and Be Easy: New & Selected Poems, respectively, followed by an on-stage conversation led by a local author/journalist. The evening will conclude with a book sale and signing. The event is presented as part of the 2026/2027 Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series.
Victoria Chang is the author of several volumes of poetry, including With My Back to the World, The Trees Witness Everything, and OBIT, and the nonfiction book Dear Memory: Letters on Writing, Silence, and Grief. OBIT was named a New York Times Notable Book; received the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; was longlisted for the National Book Award; and was named a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Griffin International Poetry Prize. Chang joins Inprint with her new collection Tree of Knowledge. Sparked by the image of a eucalyptus tree being cut down, the poems explore art, memory, history, and loss. At the core of the collection, the long poem “Eureka” examines the violent 1885 expulsion of Chinese Americans from the eponymous California town. In a starred review, Publisher’s Weekly says, “Readers will revel in the exquisite balance achieved by each poem. This is a work of rapture and hard-won revelation.”
Pulitzer Prize finalist and editor-in-chief of Poetry magazine, Adrian Matejka has been a mainstay of contemporary American poetry for over two decades, admired for his “patient, clever, controlled, [and] visionary” poems (Hanif Abdurraqib) and “his agile, musical voice, vivid imagery, and talent for cultural critique” (Publishers Weekly). Matejka is the author of six poetry collections—including The Big Smoke, nominated for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, and the graphic novel Last On His Feet: Jack Johnson and the Battle of the Century, one of The New York Public Library’s 10 Best Books of 2023 and a finalist for the prestigious 2024 Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work.
