Empty Bowls
by Kristi Beer, Inprint Poetry Busker

There is a beauty in an empty bowl
full of promises to come,

the shape nurtured by the artist’s hands
like a mother swaddling her baby

the smooth hardness a reminder of the fire
the base an anchor in the storm.

There is a beauty in an empty bowl
multiplied by the hundreds here

where people have gathered
to eat soup together and remember that

there is a beauty in an empty bowl
except to those with empty stomachs.
