ERIKA L. SÁNCHEZ is the author of the National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestseller I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. According to The New York Times, “This gripping debut about a Mexican-American misfit is alive and crackling,” and Juan Felipe Herrera adds, “This book will change everything…. A perfect book about imperfection.” The novel is currently being adapted into a film directed by Emmy award-winning actress America Ferrera. A poet by training, Sánchez is also the author of the poetry collection Lessons on Expulsion, “a fierce, assertive debut” (The Washington Post) that challenges notions of femininity, race, religion, and sexuality. She has received fellowships from Princeton, the Chicago Public Library Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation. Her nonfiction work has appeared in The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Salon, and Cosmopolitan for Latinas, where she was the sex and love advice columnist.
Sánchez joins us to read from and talk about her new memoir-in-essays Crying in the Bathroom, “an account of childhood depression, falling in love with comedy, a ‘fraught’ relationship with her grandmother, a bad marketing job in the Sears Tower, and risking the uneasy life of a writer” (Chicago Tribune). For Jason Reynolds, “Erika L. Sánchez has undoubtedly cemented herself as not just one of my favorite writers, but also my best friend…. Why wouldn’t I want to be close to someone so intentional, so funny, so proven, and most importantly, so self-aware they could tell a story about their life in a way that makes me take inventory of my own?” Rebecca Makkai calls the book “honest, cutting, hilarious, revelatory.” Sánchez lives in Chicago and serves as the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Chair in the Latin American and Latino Studies Department at DePaul University.
JASMINNE MENDEZ is a Dominican-American poet, educator, translator, playwright, and author of several books for adults and children, including the YA memoirs Island of Dreams (which won an International Latino Book Award) and Island Apart (forthcoming), and Night-Blooming Jasmin(n)e: Personal Essaysand Poetry. Her debut poetry collection City Without Altar will be released in August 2022, and her debut middle grade novel-in-verse Aniana del Mar Jumps In is forthcoming in 2023. She is Program Director for the literary arts nonprofit Tintero Projects and co-hosts the Inprint/Tintero Projects podcast Ink Well, which showcases primarily Latinx writers.
