DAN SANTAT is the Caldecott Medal-winning and New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend. He is also the creator of Are We There Yet?, After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again), Drawn Together, Lift, The Guild of Geniuses, and Sidekicks. About The Guild of Geniuses, Booklist writes, “Santat creates a fabulous world filled with kitschy delights.” About Sidekicks, Kirkus adds, “The lovable menagerie of crime-fighting pets offers lots of laughs and an exuberant storyline.” Dan’s artwork has been featured in numerous picture books, chapter books, and middle-grade novels, including Dav Pilkey’s Ricky Ricotta series.

Dan joins us to read from and talk about his new novel The Aquanaut, a whimsical graphic novel “with smart pacing that swings between hilarity and suspense” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). According to Booklist, “This winning tale’s all about reaching out, to family, to friends, to shipmates, and especially to fearful strangers who need your help.” Soon after Sophia meets Sodapop the hermit crab, Antonio and Carlos the octopuses, and Jobim the sea turtle, she discovers that something sinister is going on at her local marine theme park. Will Sophia and the aquanaut crew be able to free the park’s captive marine life before it’s too late?

After graduating from the Art Center College of Design, Dan worked as a commercial artist, a 3D modeler, and a video game concept artist. He created a popular Disney animated series called The Replacements, and was even offered a job as a Google doodler before pursuing his career in children’s books. Today he lives in Southern California with his wife, two kids, and many, many pets.
