Claudia Rankine will read from her new hybrid-genre work Triage, followed by an on-stage conversation led by poet and Rice University professor Phillip B. Williams. The evening will conclude with a book sale and signing. The event is presented as part of the 2026/2027 Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series. 

Whether writing about intimacy or alienation, Claudia Rankine possesses a voice of unrelenting candor that “shimmers with wisdom and fury” (The Telegraph). A MacArthur Fellow, Rankine is the author of five collections of poetry, including her bestselling Citizen: An American Lyric, which explores what it means to be an American citizen in a “post-racial” society. A defining text for our time, Citizen won the National Book Critics Circle Award, the NAACP Image Award, the PEN Open Book Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. She is also the author of three plays, including Provenance of Beauty: A South Bronx Travelogue, which is performed on a bus ride through the Bronx; and is the editor of several anthologies, including The Racial Imaginary: Writers on Race in the Life of the Mind.

Rankine returns to Inprint with her genre-defying new work Triage, which collides the lyric with narrative, memoir, image, and essay to offer her most personal and emotionally resonant writing yet. Triage follows the turbulent friendship between two characters, the narrator and the theorist, self-identified sisters struggling to define their wounded histories and their shared but separate lives. According to Jamaica Kincaid, “Claudia Rankine’s remarkable, outstanding odyssey—an account of our present, which is also our past, which is always our future—is beautifully rendered in a kaleidoscope of images and sensations. . . .
