Polishing Magazine Features for Publication

Coming up with a story idea and pitching it to a publication can feel daunting.  In this class, students will work on and enhance a feature story to ready it for publication. Students will learn behind-the-scenes aspects of the magazine business and what it takes to get their story to publication. The instructor, award-winning journalist, Brooke Lewis, will also share her journey of developing story ideas, pitching to publications, and more on her career as a freelance writer. Class sessions will include visits from featured experts in the journalism field who have experience writing, pitching, and editing feature stories. Students will also learn other examples of magazine writing, including what makes a great profile and Q&A. They will further sharpen their interviewing skills, so they have compelling interviews that lead to compelling stories.

In the first half of the class, students will develop and continue to workshop their magazine pieces, hone interviewing skills, dive into the finer points of the magazine business, and read feature stories from talented writers. In the second half of the class, we will focus on pitching our stories to a publication. The instructor will help students target a publication they want to pitch to, and we will work on crafting the pitch email together. Students will also hear from a freelance writer who has experience pitching stories and an editor who sifts through pitch emails. The goal is for every student who finishes this workshop to come out as a stronger writer, with a story they’re proud to share with the world and feel comfortable pitching to target markets. This workshop is open to writers of all levels.

This class has four in-person sessions: January 11, January 18, January 25 and February 15. The two-week break before the final class will be time for offline refinement of pieces, individual check-ins with the instructor, and preparation for a final full-class in-person workshop and discussion. In case of an emergency, such an inclement weather, a given class session might be moved online.
