There is a tendency, especially among newer writers, to revert to trusted formulas when telling a story. Consequently, they craft into being stories that often feel rigid; stories that wear their shape and intensions hard on their sleeves. But the kind of stories that live long after we’re gone are often the ones that balance artistry and thematic heft with some measure of subtlety. How then can we move beyond telling merely efficient stories to telling stories that carry in them that spark of transcendence? Over these six weeks, we will write new stories and revisit old ones in a bid to answer this question. We will break apart model stories to examine character, the arc of the story, setting, dialogue and everything in-between, and explore how these elements of craft could come to full realization in a manner that leaves for organic and truly memorable narratives.
