Building a Story: Piece by Piece
“The truth is, reading is always more important than writing.” – Roberto Bolaño
Over the next six weeks, we will be reading stories and craft essays that exemplify some of the key elements of storytelling, including characterization, plot, setting, point of view, and theme/metaphor. Each week will be dedicated to one of these specific elements and we will look at stories that take varying approaches.
Weekly writing prompts and in-class exercises will help you generate new writing or add new passages to your existing work. In this way, week by week, you will be able to build a brand-new piece of writing or radically revise one already in-progress. Students will leave with an understanding of the fundamental elements required to build a story and will receive peer and instructor feedback on the writing they’ve generated during the course.
