Writing Fiction & Reading as a Writer
“The truth is, reading is always more important than writing.” – Roberto Bolaño
In this eight-week writing workshop, we will read flash fiction, short stories, novella and novel excerpts across various time periods, continents, and genres. We will tie the selected readings to elements of writing craft, such as dialogue, point of view, the art of the sentence, plot, and more.
Each week we will generate new material through exercises focused on elements of craft. Everyone will have the opportunity to workshop a story or an excerpt of a longer piece. Workshop submissions will receive detailed feedback from the instructor. We will be writing outside of class and complete assigned readings prior to each meeting. By the end of the course, we will see how focusing on a wide range of reading can expand our creative horizons and directly improve our writing, especially on the sentence level. This workshop is open to writers of all levels and backgrounds.
