Fundamentals of Fiction

This course will introduce you to the narrative craft of fiction. Over the course of six weeks, we will focus on key concepts, techniques, and practices that will prepare you to make more intentional and effective choices in your writing. We’ll discuss published stories that take a variety of approaches to their thematic and emotional content to see these concepts in action. You will have the opportunity to workshop a story with the class and receive detailed written feedback from the instructor. Classes will consist of craft lessons covering fiction fundamentals (plot, character, point of view, scene, structure, etc.), analysis of assigned readings, generative writing sessions, and constructive workshop time. By the end of the course, you will have a set of practical tools and a broadened sense of the elements of fiction and their potential from the writer’s point of view. This workshop is open to writers of all levels.
