SUMMARY:FICTION 2019-301
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, we’ll explore the realms of “Fantastic Fiction\,” from the whimsical to the uncanny. These stories and novels sometimes explore literal magic in the world—as in Kelly Link’s short stories—alternate (un)realities—as in Robert Coover’s or Ray Bradbury’s work–or sometimes\, internal realities so powerful\, they overcome the real world—as in Shirley Jackson’s fiction. Each week\, we’ll follow these writers to the bottom of their unique rabbit holes to see what techniques we can identify and try in our own work. The ten-week workshop will dip into a number of “genres\,” including fantasy\, science fiction\, the “new weird\,” and appropo of the season\, horror. We’ll discuss published works of fiction from both established and emerging writers\, and generate new work through in-class exercises. We’ll also incorporate manuscript critique towards writers’ existing works-in-progress. \n
