LINE BY LINE: THE ART OF THE SENTENCE
Writing effective prose is not only a matter of choosing the right word, but also of making different kinds of sentences for different purposes within a story. Dialogue, description, action, narrative summary, and internal monologue are modes of narration, each with its own possibilities and imperatives. The rhythm and structure of sentences convey thought, action, emotion, and more. By studying what each sentence does, we can gain more control over our writing; by practicing these techniques, we create new ways to tell stories. In this one-day intensive course, we will study and imitate the work of master stylists to learn how they make great sentences, and what makes their sentences great.
