Memoir/Online 2024-208

Course #Memoir/Online 2024-208
Tuesdays Starting October 1 6:30 pm–8:30 pm running 8 weeks
Cost: $320 Instructor: Nishta Mehra

This is an online workshop that takes place via Zoom

Creativity as Antidote

Memoir writing is the work of framing one’s story on one’s own terms: equal parts assertion and exploration. For those of us who have experienced challenges with our bodies, exploring ways to bring our stories to the page can be empowering. In this workshop, we will utilize the writings of others navigating health-related journeys to inspire us to frame our own. Whether we intend our work for a broader audience or ourselves, the act of mapping our experiences through words offers us agency, voice, and visibility.

In-class time will be reserved for craft discussion, short writing exercises, and sharing of and responses to our work, with the majority of writing to take place outside of class. Individual feedback from the instructor will be tailored to meet each participant’s needs and provided electronically. This workshop welcomes writers of all levels and abilities.

About the instructor

NISHTA MEHRA is the author of two essay collections, The Pomegranate King and Brown White Black. She holds a BA in Religious Studies from Rice University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona and spent fifteen wonderful years teaching in middle-and-high-school classrooms before chronic pain forced a career change. As a writer, Mehra explores with honesty and curiosity her experiences as a queer woman, adoptive parent, first-generation American raised by Indian immigrants in Memphis, Tennessee, and a human of conscience on this fragile planet.
