Feature Story Development and Shaping for Magazines and Other Publications

Coming up with a story idea and pitching it to a publication can feel daunting. In this class, you will learn how to write a compelling feature story that you can pitch to magazines and online publications. I will also share my journey of developing story ideas, pitching to publications, and more on my career as a freelance writer.  You will also work on writing a great feature story filled with captivating writing, dynamic storytelling, strong interviews, and interesting people.

In this class, you will learn how to write a compelling feature story on any topic that is of interest to you. In the first half of the class, we will learn what makes a strong feature story. We will analyze feature writing from exemplary writers and ask these questions: What makes this story compelling? How did the author craft this piece? What is the takeaway of this story? Participants will also begin brainstorming their own feature story ideas. In the second half of the class, participants will start working on their own feature story draft. They will learn how to interview for a longform story through instructive in-class exercises. They will also hear from other award-winning journalists who have crafted excellent features. Participants will revise and edit their drafts to get them into publication-ready form. They will learn about pitching to publications and what it takes for a story to be accepted for publication. They goal is for every student who finishes this workshop to come out as a stronger writer, with a story they’re proud to share with the world. This workshop is open to writers of all levels.
