Visual artists often talk about the ability of an artist “to see.” This entails both knowing what to look at and how to look at it to present the most engaging image. Creative Nonfiction draws upon life, focusing the attention of the reader and framing a situation or idea to make the mundane profound and the extraordinary accessible. This course will examine writing strategies such as description, characterization, scene-building, plot, and narration as we explore multiple creative nonfiction formats including personal essay, travel writing, lyric essay, literary journalism, and collage. Through examination of published work, writing prompts, and class workshop of participant work, we will study and practice our craft and work toward “seeing” experiences and situations as storytellers.
