We will consider essays in a range of styles and forms, from writers such as Gloria Anzaldua, bell hooks, Sherman Alexie, Brian Doyle, Leslie Jamison, and others. Each class will examine how essays make use of compression and expansion, progression and voice, as well as how they handle scene, reflection, and other elements of craft. I will provide a range of generative exercises and revision strategies, and we will workshop together. Each writer will come away from the class with one fully wrought essay and a store of skills, materials, and inspiration from which they can draw future writing.

This workshop is open to K-12 classroom teachers, through the generous support of the Kinder Foundation.
