DESCRIPTION:It’s been a long time since Shelley said\, “Poetry is a mirror which makes beautiful that which is distorted\,” but the ways that poetry can reflect\, refract\, distort\, and distill our lives into beauty has only grown in that time.\nIn this eight-week class\, we’ll look closely at the landscape of contemporary poetry\, studying how living poets make meaning and power from tonality\, voice\, sound\, image\, and understatement\, as well as how to make use of the poetic line (and that sometimes-dreaded white space on the page).\nWe’ll also work at being in good relationship to other poets\, sharing each other’s poetic efforts and challenges while spurring each other on to better and better work. By the conclusion of the class\, each student will have gained a new set of strategies for approaching the blank page\, as well as the means to shape and reshape their words into verse. \n
