DESCRIPTION:Meet the author! \nFree and open to the public. Doors open at 2:15 pm.  \nInprint invites you to enjoy an afternoon with celebrated middle-grade author Katherine Paterson. Ms. Paterson will make a presentation about her new novel My Brigadista Year. After the presentation\, she will take questions from the audience\, followed by a book sale and signing*\, giving fans a chance to visit with her. Books will be available for sale at the event through Blue Willow Bookshop. \nKatherine Paterson\, two-time winner of the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award\, is the beloved author of over thirty books. Her bestselling middle grade novels\, among others\, include Bridge to Terabithia and The Great Gilly Hopkins. \nShe comes to Houston to share her latest middle grade story My Brigadista Year\, coming out October 2017 through Candlewick Press. On September 26\, 1960\, Fidel Castro declared to the United Nations that Cuba would eradicate illiteracy within one year. More than 100\,000 students from the cities volunteered as brigadistas in the campaign; most of them were 12 to 19 years old and over half were women. Publishers Weekly says\, “Through Lora’s naïve but openhearted perspective\, Paterson weaves in details about Cuban history and the events that led to the overthrow of the Batista regime and the rise of Communism…Paterson’s story is without political agenda\, focusing instead on an improbable (and successful) literacy campaign and how it dramatically expands the world of one sheltered but determined girl.” \nMs. Paterson’s other awards include the Hans Christian Andersen Award\, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award\, and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award.
