In this course, we will be concerned mostly with writing and with developing our understanding of how fiction works. To get us there, we will be reading published fiction and craft essays, discussing pertinent topics in class, and devoting ourselves to giving helpful feedback. Our goal is practicality. We want to learn in a way that gets us to a place where we are making better decisions when drafting and when revising. Some of the things we will pick apart―with the goal of putting them back together successfully in our own work―are scene, narrative distance, point of view, and detail. Students will be encouraged to experiment and should not worry about having perfect drafts to review and critique. This course will accommodate writers working on stories or a novel.
